Chris & Meagan de Bono founded Meru Miso in Melbourne, Australia in 2015 with the intention of creating an authentic fresh miso the whole world could enjoy. Today they are based in Tasmania and are committed to crafting the highest quality Australian made Japanese condiments. Since launching the range of Miso they have supplied their products to some of the best restaurants & retailers in Australia and even work alongside chefs to create bespoke miso. Made from Australian biodynamic & organic ingredients by hand using traditional techniques, their products are individually handcrafted in small batches with limited use of industrial machinery to ensure minimal impact on our environment.
Late in 2016, Meru Foods was approached by the newly rebranded Northern Tasmanian Development Commission (NTDC) to participate in a program designed to support a cluster of food businesses from Tasmania's North into export. In Meru Miso's case, they are actively pursuing opportunities but are six to 12 months away from being ready to export.
The Tasmanian Government has been planning a trade mission to East Asia in late February 2017. The countries and regions under consideration include Japan (Tokyo), China (Ningbo), and Korea (Seoul). The Trade Mission has been based on the needs of trade-ready or investment-ready participating businesses and strategic state-wide opportunities.
Chris de Bono from Meru Foods says that this program has came at a perfect time for them. Their business and their products will be showcased during the February trade mission, to demonstrate to interested parties the types of food businesses that are being developed in Tasmania's North. Chris says that this is is definitely an exciting time to be a food business in Tasmania, with growing interest from a number of overseas markets who are all looking to Tasmanian food for it's increased marketability.
Exciting times for the Meru Foods team. FermenTasmania wish Chris all the best on growing their export potential during the Trade Mission to East Asia.
